Is the time right for
Activity-Based Modelling in
Australia?

Monday 26th September 2011, 5:00pm – 6:30pm

Department of Transport Theatrette,
Level 5 /
121 Exhibition Street

Activity-Based models have been used in practice for more than a decade with a number of significant advances within the last year. The first presentation will start with the Victorian Integrated Survey of Travel and Activity (VISTA), highlighting its critical role as a data source for Activity-Based modelling. It will also discuss some of the opportunities that Activity-Based modelling may provide over 'traditional' four-step strategic transport modelling.

The second presentation will begin with an overview and description of the technical underpinnings of each of the individual components that comprise this new paradigm in transport modelling. It will then discuss recent advances using project examples such as San Diego where all location choices are based upon a fine level of spatial resolution that allows for improvements in understanding access and egress to public transport, better representation of non-motorised travel, and incorporation of explanatory variables that respond to transit-oriented development strategies and related plans. Other notable advancements in Activity-Based models have been the modelling of travel time reliability as a function of perceived highway time and congestion levels, and the inclusion of parking choice and constrained parking equilibrium models in congested Central Business Districts. The presentation will also describe the basic structure, implementation, and application of these new advancements.

The presentations will conclude with a discussion of the level-of-effort associated with moving to Activity-Based Models and the opportunities for creating transition strategies from a trip-based to an activity-based framework.
